Can England’s Forces do it in Europe?

This year, 5 of the 16 qualifiers for the Champions League were English clubs. Liverpool, Man United, Man City and Tottenham topped their groups with Chelsea finishing as runners up. However, how likely is it that one of these teams to win the whole thing? Personally, I don’t think they will because:

• Tough possible last 16 draws: the clubs that have finished top do not have an easy last 16 ahead of them. Whilst clubs would hope to beat Porto,  Shakhtar or Basel, they could face Bayern, Juventus or Real Madrid. Chelsea also have some tough possibilities.

• There aren’t enough world class players: There is no Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo in the Premier League and that could be a factor. There is certainly some big talent in the clubs but I think that they will lack a world class player.

• Not enough experience: Man City reached the last 16 last year but aside from that, no one else made it to the knock out stages whilst only Tottenham were even in the groups. Unfortunately, it may be a while until one of these teams has the experience to win.

Sadly, I don’t think that an English team will win in Europe this year but I think that in the years to come, they can do it.

Champions League Round Up

There were 5 English clubs competing in the Champions League this week and I will be reviewing all of them here:

Tottenham vs Real Madrid

Tottenham did incredibly well to defeat champions Real Madrid 3-1. They played very well and Alli grabbed the first goal in the 27th minute. He also scored the second after half time with Eriksen finishing the game. Ronaldo scored a consellation goal late on but could not stop Tottenham.

Liverpool vs Maribor

After a 7-0 victory 2 weeks ago, many people were expecting the same again from Liverpool but the first half didn’t bring the results. Liverpool could not find the back of the net and fans were getting nervous. However, Salah found the break through right after half time. They went on to score 2 more goals through Can and Sturridge and ended up with the comfortable win they were looking for.

Roma vs Chelsea

It was not a good night for Chelsea from the very start. El Shaarawy scored the opener within 40 seconds and grabbed another soon after. Perroti scores the 3rd in the second half but Chelsea could not do much to prevent Roma winning 3-0.

Napoli vs Man City

This was a very exiting game with 6 goals scored. Insigne opened the scoring and Otamendi scored an equaliser before half time. Stones scored an early second half goal to give Man City the lead but Jorginho scored a penalty to draw the score to 2-2. However, goals from Aguero and Sterling secured Man City a 4-2 victory.

Man United vs Benfica

This was a tight game between these two and it took a very unlucky own goal for Man United to take the lead right before half time. The two kept battling it out until Blind scored a penalty in the 78th minute. It was a good game but Benfica could not prevent Man United from winning 2-0.
